Owl’s Head Light
This is the Owl’s Head light. It is at the mouth of the harbor. You can just see the Rockland Breakwater lighthouse from here, just not in this picture. Because of location and accessibility, lighthouse pictures tend to be classics that are done over and over. This angle is no exception except that I was there and I took the picture. Somehow I have ownership and have documented the experience. It’s better than looking at the picture in a book.

Hi Victor. Great picture and the lighthouse is fabulous. Way back a great great grandfather of mine used to design them in the UK .. in Victorian times I guess. So am always fascinated by them.

Wow. He designed them! The USA has all manner and shape of lighthouses. Similar but the same. The paint scheme is distinct in Canada. Otherwise lighthouses are a favorite subject for me. Some are harder to get to see than others. While I was in Maine it was a hobby to try to find each of them listed on the map.

Yes, he spent his early working life as a mining engineer in Australia back in the 1840′s as I understand it. Then returned to the UK and worked on lighthouse design. His father had been a Royal Naval sea captain so I guess it was in his blood. Me, I just love to be by the sea. And lighthouses, of course. Look forward to more of your photos.

Being there is always magical – there’s something about a lighthouse. Did you go to the top and inside?

I have been to this lighthouse a few times. It is one of the easier lighthouses to access. The inside is accessible infrequently and on one occasion I happened to visit on the one day in the year that it was open to see the light itself.

I like your view, no matter how often it is done. It is like you said, you own your view of it in photo and mind’s eye. Lighthouses make great photo subjects and you had a good blue sky as a backdrop.
