East Quoddy, Head Harbor Light

East Quoddy Lighthouse, Campobello Island, Canada. To get to the island you must leave Lubec, Maine and enter Canada. The lighthouse has a distinctive Canadian color pattern different from those in the USA. The light is all the same. But you’re still in a foreign country. It was neat to be in Canada for an hour. This is a follow up to my post of a few days ago in which I mistakenly mixed up the East and West lights. I saw too many lighthouses in one day.

  1. Hi Victor. Great post. Did you need to clear Customs to make this trip? Also, interesting design on the lighthouse … it looks like the flag of St George of England!

    • My traveling companion was my office manager who accompanied me on this trip. We stopped at a market on Campobello Island and she bought a six pack of Canadian beer and covered it with my jacket. Coming through customs on the Canadian side the border guard poked his head into the open passenger window and asked if we had anything to declare. Somehow he did not glance at the very obvious lump under my jacket in the back seat. My office manager replied, “Oh no officer. Nothing at all.” Responding in kind to her sweet smile, he waved us through to the USA. In reply to my surprise Gail said, “You can’t bring beer across. I was either going to smuggle it or I was going to drink the six pack on the Canadian side.” You also need to know that I don’t drink.
