High dynamic range. It’s a photographic technique. Smash three images together to get a better “whole.” The concept: the high, medium, low tones are too great to be captured together in a single image on film or sensor. Sensor! We can capture three images and put all three together. Complicated? My new spiffy camera can do it “in camera” by merely pressing the shutter. This is not a good example. The image looks spooky. I can immediately appreciate the manipulation. And, the casual viewer knows something is not quite right. But, we got much more detail in the image than from out of the camera “automatically.” You can get “instant” black and white as easily as going to another “setting.” What happened to “work?” Is it craft if it is so easy as to change a setting “just like that!”?
