…… till we meet again. It ain’t great photography. But it’s poignant and a keeper. We will remember good-bye for a long time to come. It breaks my heart. Snapshots. I carry a camera. You have your phone. We commemorate small moments to future remembrance. Profound? Nope, just fact. We miss them already. Caveat: keep a camera close and handy at all times. Do not be shooting said camera while driving – like I did.
Never ever! Never ever fly through Riyadh. I said it twice. You have been warned!
It’s a beautiful airport. It is a transit hub that funnels passengers to Jeddah/Mecca. Flights leave from multiple airlines continuously. I arrived from the US on a 6PM flight. My connecting flight to Jeddah was at 9PM. Plenty of time. I watched the board for announcements beginning an hour before the flight. Ten minutes after my flight departed, they posted – “Departed” – on the flight status board. No gate. No warning. No last call. Nothing. They never announced the gate number. This was the start to the nightmare. I caught a flight out at 1AM. Flights leave every hour. My plane was half empty. So go figure. I got to Jeddah airport and was met by the hospital driver. We threw my bags into the trunk. The driver turned to me and asked if I had the keys. No! He called another driver – for a spare key? No! For tools to break into the car! At 4AM we are in the parking lot breaking and entering. Really! It was a long flight made longer by a series of errors.
Never ever fly through Riyadh to make a connection. I have heard horror stories from others. If you feel inclined to ignore the warning….
The airport is all outdoors. It never rains until it rains. So you are taken to and from the plane by bus. The terminal could certainly use some modernization. It’s a bit cramped. I see these tents. I imagine that they are for shade. The only thing is that there is no terminal or parking lot there. Maybe it’s the international terminal for non Saudi airlines. So far I have only flown in and out on a Saudi jet. Another mystery…from a distance it could be so interesting if it had been done right.
Gee, I haven’t seen this stuff since the astronauts went up. To the right are large containers of powdered milk also. I mean really large containers; look closely. They are like gallon size and enough to make gallons and gallons of drink. Super market? Nope. Airport lounge. Huh? Where are you going? What travel destination beckons where you would stop off in the duty free shop and get a couple containers of Tang for the road. Which, by the way, they don’t sell any powdered drinks in the super market – diet ice tea and such. But Tang, you can’t get enough, I guess. Don’t be late to the airport, you won’t have enough time to shop for Tang.
