Perfect

The quest for the perfect gift is serendipitous at best. You would never guess and can never quite guess what will be a hit. Certainly, capturing the moment of surprise and joy is just as fraught. Sometimes a moment passes too quickly to capture. And, sometimes, you catch the moment perfectly. Certainly, the joy is apparent. It makes me smile as I edit. Have you seen the new plant based food? There is something disingenuous in making fake meat. Either you eat meat or you give it up for … broccoli. You simply can’t have it both ways. ??? So, fake bacon? It was enough to make me an instant vegetarian! The moment? Everyone had their phones out. I reached for my camera/flash. One shot. That was it. One chance. Perfect.
Slow day
We’re home. Not much doing, so what to do? Cook. Oh, we got TP! Gotta have the essentials. Biscuits, from a Red Lobster gluten free mix, imagine that. We got that stuff in Walmart. It was an unlikely place (to find it). The real surprise was that the biscuits were really good, as in, I would buy a mix again (if I come across it). Asparagus, it’s a little early for the big thick ones. So, I peeled the tough skin with a potato peeler. Add vinaigrette and it’s pretty near to perfect without too much effort. Bacon anyone? Yeah, unhealthy. This was two pounds (fresh cut) on sale – ½ price. Wow! I just hit it, lucky. Yup, it cooks down to practically nothing. But good! And, crab cakes, fresh made and delicious. No picture. Colleen ate it before I could … yes! A good time was had by all. If they had told me, “Make a post about bacon…”
Bacon
Do you like it? Do you eat it? My mom made BLT’s for me during college on Sundays. It would be Sunday lunch with shoe string fries that she fried up in the bacon fat for an extra flavor taste. What did we know about unhealthy eating back then? I used to get a BLT in Morgantown WV when we traveled there for orthodontic appointments. They were memorably sublime. Kidding! I just remember that we’d stop in the same diner downtown and I’d always have a BLT. Some who know me also know I’m a creature of habit. I still like a BLT. …very occasionally, ‘cause they are not exactly healthy to eat. This package was unrefrigerated in the grocery aisle. I paused. Ha ha. This sh*t is worse than Spam. 70 calories 45 from fat! Well, Spam’s worse – 120 cal/slice 110 from fat. Either way, look at the price per unit – $31 /lb. Eat steak. Eat filet mignon. Eat as much as you want. Bacon is fat and it’s expensive fat. Where’s the bang for your buck? I? Me? I still like a BLT when I can persuade my personal cook to make one. Otherwise I don’t order one in a restaurant. So many choices so little time…
