My original title was: “Loser”… too unkind. It could’ve happened to me.
Well, maybe wind challenged? Umm…? So this played out next to us. Poor guy. A small kid. Don’t get scorched. Put up an umbrella. Of course, if you are a tourist to the beach, go cheap. And light (weight). And, you get what you pay for. Throw good money after bad…? You can rent: hourly, daily, week – an umbrella, beach chairs. A good looking young woman will even plant the umbrella and take it away. Easy. No muss, no fuss. Ok, not a loser. Amateur! It was fun to watch. I made up a whole side bar narrative to go along with the pics. Bottom line – go with a better umbrella.
We hit a day with nice waves. Kids or not? It’s not easy to get this shot. The waves break big. Or not. I am great at getting the wave picture when they are small. I started counting the cycle. About every fifth or sixth wave was big. My camera wouldn’t focus. I had to pre-focus. I got a lot of duds. And I got a few that were ok. Timing. It’s all about timing. I have been trying. It’s a work in progress. It’s oh so deceptively easy. Not!
The lifeguards have to carry their own stuff down to the beach each morning. And they train. I assume it’s the lifeguards who train, running and swimming along the beach each day. They police forbidden activity, perform basic first aid, and rescue errant swimmers. It’s a lot of responsibility. I, once passed the exam for lifeguard in New York City. Too many applicants, not enough positions. I was offered a job on the waterfront in a summer camp. I wonder why I turned it down?
It’s a New Jersey beach just south of New York City. It’s within sight of the city though it takes quite a bit of time to get there. It’s a clothing optional beach. That would be euphemism for naked. So, many people do. I knew it as a gay haven. But alas, after these many years I must apologize to Charlie. We flew over the beach in his helicopter and he was delighted to surprise me. I wasn’t (surprised). And furthermore, I pointed out that it was all guys who were waving up at the helicopter overhead. He immediately steered the ship away. He and I are not gay buddies. But my apologies. It seems that there were mixed couples. It took me a long time to get back to the old slides. I wonder if it’s still clothing optional? Sadly, the WTC is no longer there.
I found it curious that the gull sat on the sign. He let me take his picture. So, I did. It was a beautiful sunny day. I’m glad to see the gulls are following the rules.
Bright sunny day! Most beach shots are boring. It’s a horizontal view with some people and the waves breaking behind them. That would be my average. A bikini keeps the interest. But otherwise it’s not too exciting. The water in the Atlantic is cold! – for me! I’m spoiled. I’ve been in the Red Sea. I’ve been in the Caribbean and Hawaii. I’m not dropping names and destinations. I’m just comparing an ice bath to a nice warm one. I choose the warm waters. So, this is Long Island. It’s beautiful. The sand beaches are wide and the best I’ve ever seen. The rest of the world has narrow beaches. Really! But I stopped going in the water shortly after “Jaws” came out. And the cold keeps me out. Nowadays I am a great admirer of the beach. Just give me warm waters to float in. Better yet, give me a good dive spot.
The funny thing is that less than half a mile away on US 1 it was bright and sunny. We went down to say “Hello” to the ocean. I haven’t really realized how much this means to me until now. Thanks.
And there was fog. It’s like London without the crowds. Okay, so don’t fall down laughing. I can’t think of another analogy. But, it’s neat. I’m glad we went.
We don’t frequent this beach. It’s crowded and touristy. I don’t need to be here. So we stopped on the way through. Just to look. It’s honky. You see neat stuff. Don’t curse. Oh, and you are not allowed to bathe bare chested. Well, that would be if you are a woman.
Don’t get me wrong. I got nothing against bare chests. Some people just shouldn’t…. It was chilly that day. But there are always those who insist that the weather is better than it is.
This poor guy was playing his guitar sideways. He needed a better speaker. He had no audience. No one who passed, paused. Maybe he was just practicing for the summer crowd to come?
February 21, it was a record day all around (72F). Ice skating rinks closed for the day in NYC– melted. It was a record here too. A walk on the beach? Of course! Old people, young people. A good time was had by all. Warm sun, balmy, the smell of salt air, a gentle breeze, what more could you ask for in the middle of winter? There ain’t no climate change… there ain’t no climate change… there …
At this time of the year we take the opportunity to go say “hi” to the beach when the weather is nice. I guess we could go anytime. But I like the bright sunshine. It helps if it’s not too breezy… hey, we live here and I can pick and choose. Yup, it’s interesting this time of year when you can take a pic at the beach and not have anyone in it.
