This is the follow up to the meringue cookies. If I didn’t tell and you didn’t know, then flat cookies look good next to a BLT. This is the quintessential sandwich of my childhood. It is best eaten when someone else has made it! And yes! This was made for me by a someone else – beloved! The cookies were good! Too! And my cats? Well, they are my 10%ers now. Spice was all over the bacon. Hey! Don’t mess with daddy’s food! She got nearly a slice before I could finish. Yes, they are predators at mealtime. Eat fast or perish.
After houses and decorations, there was not much interest in decorating a few dozen cookies. So…. One two three… Done. They are not burnt. The dark ones are gingerbread to contrast the butter cookies. My kids would do works of art in Christmas’s past. But I was abandoned and tasked with a few dozen unadorned cookies…..And less sugar actually is better sometimes. It’s still yum.
The last tradition to go was Christmas cookies. It was your basic homemade sugar cookie recipe with lots of butter. But the key was in the decorating. Icing, sprinkles, and what have you were all arrayed and an assembly line formed. The kids were actually pretty artistic in their fanciful decorating. Of course much of the work never left the kitchen table or got into the cookie tin.
