Long Game

IMG_2589

If you scuba dive long enough you can get shots like this. The coral hind and wrasse are in a symbiotic dance. The wrasse cleans the bigger fish. The hind is in the grouper family and is very shy. I suppose if you were fire engine red in color, you might not want to draw attention. So occasionally, very occasionally, I get a shot. The ordinary shot is of the tail end as he swims away. And if you are patient and you wait, then sometimes he is pointed straight at you. And if you catch him when he’s getting cleaned by a wrasse, then you have the shot you want. So I am not in a hurry. Patience. Readiness. And my time came. Easy? No! But I was there at the right moment. A lot of things have to align, but then you would not appreciate it unless you tried and failed. I have, and so, believe me when I say that it’s not hard for me anymore. But it’s still not easy. Special! Definitely!

Mad …or Just Showing Teeth

I’m not using macro. And I’m not challenging. He’s not challenging either. The coral hind is a big chicken. Well, he’s a fish that would prefer to flee rather than confront. I trap them periodically under coral. Nowhere to retreat. Or he feels like I can’t pursue. Or, he thinks I can’t see him. Who knows? Anyway, I can occasionally get a good head on shot. Ok, done, been there, done it. Now I got teeth. I know sharks have teeth. So too does this brand of fish. They are not large. Do they fall out and are they replaced by new sharp teeth that will rip your guts out? Ah! And why don’t fish have eyebrows?

Face to Face

Coral hind, does the name really matter? I encounter these fish on the reef. They avoid me. They see me swim up and they scoot. Do fish scoot? Anyway, it’s near impossible to get head to head.IMG_9267 They just give me a flick of the tail and I don’t get anything. I’ve found that if you don’t breath and drift up … And the other secret is that they think they are invisible under the coral overhang. Tally ho.IMG_9269Face to face. Eye to eye. Challenging. Dueling eyes. Who will blink? Anyway I try for both eyes looking straight at me. Do fish smile?
