Spin doctor II

Lazy. I got someone to shoot us together spinning away. And the local newspaper did not send anyone to cover the event. We were back for another round of demonstration at the fiber expo. A gal came by, whipped out her drop spindle and began to spin away beside us. All, welcome! Yeah, it was fun. No one asked about the scrub shirt. They sure asked a lot about spinning. Fun!? You bet!

Food for thought

Maine is a state in which 1% of the census population reports as African American. Here, in the middle of nowhere and with no one around, are a group holding banners decrying BLM. Ok? Where are the supporters? Where is the audience? We were randomly driving by (not another car in sight). I laud the sentiment? We later ate lunch in a restaurant where the staff was nearly all black. Hmmmm? That was remarkable. There were plenty of (non black African) customers. Life went on seamlessly. 1% African American: 99% other. It’s a free country. Go where you like? Maine?

Need to know

I have a lot of cameras. I don’t get rid of them or sell them. I just keep them and my collection grows. I collect a few vintage cameras when the price is right. Cheap! Weaving and spinning stuff is a lot more bulky. It takes up real space. I have my old cameras on a few shelves at the moment. There are four looms in my bedroom. Well, three. One went to the living room – temporarily. (I hope.)

Before the auction a prudent bidder checks the merchandise. So we did. But then a bargain comes along? This time we checked in real time and it was indeed hundreds off the list price. I bid at the auction like I meant it. We got applause when we “won” it. It’s a Schacht Matchless (spinning wheel). Sure, you would know one if you saw it? But it was worth more than $1000 used. The bobbins included were worth more $$$. And the former owner was in the audience and told us what he had last spun – for the fair. We met him. He had spun up the wool for this exhibit. It was more than 75 samples. Wow! Yeah, it was quite a feat. He stayed around till his wheel was sold. And I assured him it would go to a good home. See, we even seatbelt it like a member of the family. All of this, I’m sure, is more than you needed to know.

Scene – Protest – Abortion

I live in a Republican county. Don’t ask. From time to time they are out on the street to demonstrate. Um… ok, it’s free speech. We are all allowed our opinion and the right to express them. It was a very cold day this January. Like other hot button issues – gun control and immigration, we all have our difference of opinions. I wish there could be some common ground instead of polar opposites which will never meet. Your opinion will/should prevail and no other. This leaves me with no room but to resist. What happened to “live and let live?” Oh, that’s hitting too close to the subject here.

Alcohol and tobacco kill too. Cancer, COPD, alcoholism, drunk driving. But no, there is big money behind them. We didn’t even acknowledge tobacco is addictive and causes cancer until recently. We still shoot kids in school. Big money  protects the right of anyone to buy a weapon and aim it at our kids. Hypocrisy. You argue apples and oranges. Follow the money.

Side By Side

Look close. Side by side. I see this in retrospect as I view the edit. The ladies chose to take stand not by chance but by determined design.

They are in front of Trump International Hotel. On the margin… things played out. There will always be someone to try to change the dialog and shift the argument. It’s magic. Watch one hand while the other does magic. 800 demonstrations around the world. One purpose and one voice. For once, I am encouraged. Hopeful. But it ain’t over till it’s over. I’m voting. Another republican announced he would retire. Reason: He couldn’t win with Trump as president. A republican would have to deal with Trump’s base versus an aroused moderate base repulsed by Trump.
