Fork in the road

Remember Yogi (Berra)? He said, “When you come to the fork in the road, take it.” Nikon D70. The price was expensive but reasonable. Heretofore, digital SLR cameras cost upwards of $10k. Yikes! I got home from work and opened the box. Yes, I work late, really! And, I took pictures of the living room and kitchen. … and the family dog. I tried the built-in flash. The cow was a porcelain replica of large cows painted and distributed around public spaces in NYC. The ivory figure was a gift. It was used by women to point at areas of their body which were ailing. Modesty must be served. That figure was lost to me in the divorce. But, I can visit it.

How things changed! I timed the D70 purchase to use it for David’s graduation. It turns out that I never shot another frame of film from that point. Clean break! Complete. It was so abrupt. Done.

Parked

I watch people when there is no scenery to photograph. Library? Yes, again. The building was picturesque enough to demand a visit. Books? But, of course! There was a sale of used books! Oh, surprise! We came away with a couple (books, not people). Hat? Hats? Alpaca, you gotta feel! Soft!! Of course, they are all the more stylish in this year’s fashion cat mask. Imagine me, parked, patiently sitting in one place? Hardly! I usefully perused my phone for a place to eat. Yeah, all that sittin’ makes me hungry.

After you move

Ha ha! You never see the sights until you move away. I lived in NYC for the better part of my adult life. I have/had never been to the main branch of the NYC Public Library – you know, the one with the lions outside the entrance. Colleen came to visit from WV and off to the library we went. It was absolutely the first time for me too. It was my first and only visit. Who would have thunk that would be the case?

Library of

In the middle of the end of impeachment trial in congress… someone let their feelings be known. We live in a republican neighborhood. Trump signs are common. Good. It’s nice to see. Obtuse? You bet. I polled my only republican friend who’s not paying attention and doesn’t give a shit. So, I was as uninformed as before. … November’s coming. … and game of thrones has never been so apropos.

Book sale

We go/went to the library. They have/had a used book sale. I hand/handed off two books to Lee. She bought them. It was a joke – to me. She bought them. Do I surmise that she has issues? Or, was it me?

Cavatina

IMG_7050

It’s a roundabout story that began in Jeddah a few years back. I was sitting in a Chinese restaurant – Chopsticks. The background music track played Cavatina. I knew this song?! Of course, it was a movie sound track? I think? Siri can’t help me. She could if I played the music into my iPhone. But my “humming” the melody came up empty. Aha?! Hum it and send it to others – a PhD music professor in Ohio, or his wife an accomplished musician in her own right. Nope. No dice. Clueless! (they probably won’t see this post.)

Fast forward a few years….I’m at the local library for a classical guitar concert. Yeah, really! What do old people do in the middle of the afternoon? And this was on Peter Fletcher’s program – with explanation. The Deer Hunter! – 1979 – Meryl Streep, Robrert DiNiro, Christopher Walken. Sad haunting! Viet Nam era. What I remembered of the plot was Russian roulette and that one of the stars kills himself when his luck ran out (doesn’t it always?).

For such a beautiful tune, it’s a gruesome plot twist. To recall all of this now… it’s a full circle completed. I’m not sure I really am happy to know. Look up the song at least. You might be haunted too.
