Wait

If you wait long enough, what was old becomes new again. Back in 2017 there was an eclipse. Photograph it. That was the challenge. I got a sun filter from the camera store. After that it was a piece of cake. Ha ha! But we got it. Everyone went down to the beach and sat looking at the sun as the eclipse came and went. Brilliantly, I kept a copy of the composite in my catalog. It was sure nice to see it again. Hey, it was a shared experience. And, I got talent. Just a little…

_DSC08368 (image)

I got it wrong. I was looking for image DSC08368. Instead, the search found for me… _DSC8368. GIGO – my bad. I typed in the wrong search term. Surprise! Look what I found?!

Solar eclipse; Argentina, glacier; airport, Jeddah; cruise ship, Carribbean; Easter bonnet; airshow San Diego; safari, Africa; woodpecker; heather, Maine; US  Open, NYC; harness racing, Maine.

All the _DSC8368 images on my hard drive with all the varied files were found. There were more less worthy images as well. The memory card resets at different points with different cameras. So, number sequences repeat. I could easily enough do a time check in the metadata of each image.

Well, the point? My hard drive has a finite number of images labeled _DSC8368. They are found and span a lot of years and a lot of activity.

It appears _DSC08368 was a different camera and a different era later than 2014. It was i.e of more recent vintage. Aha! I peeked. Nikon D200 vs Sony RX100 (DSC3868). Gee, I shot a lot of fond memories with both. Naturally, it all makes sense now.

Hen’s teeth

It’s a rare event – to be impeached. It’s a rare event to experience/see a solar eclipse. Hey, I’m just reflecting upon the fact that I have experienced more impeachments of POTUS (two) than of solar eclipse (one). I ain’t proud. It’s a unique feat to be impeached twice as POTUS. Just sayin’…. let’s hope he (trump) doesn’t come around again in my lifetime… or in yours. So what? He was acquitted. I still haven’t seen another eclipse. That would be a (bought) solar filter on the front of my lens. The Senate had their own blinders on too.

Chasing the Sun

_DSC7946

We are due for a solar eclipse on August 21. The path is across the USA and will be partial where I am in Delaware. No, I’m not going to NC to get the total effect. And who knows? Maybe it will be cloudy and rainy? There is advice for those who may get to see it happen. Do not look at the sun directly! Do not point your naked camera/lens at the sun. Use proper protection (your eyes and the camera). You can get this protective gear from many sources. Get it or don’t look at the sun/eclipse directly. Me? I got glasses, a binocular, and a lens filter for my big 400mm zoom lens. The stuff was cheap. I spent about $20 for the lens filter. One trick pony, one time use. You could use a telescope or a mega zoom lens and dedicated filters = megabucks. Nope. I’m casual. One and done. Shoot the moon – super moon, blue moon – I get it when I can.

Technical specs: This image was enlarged from 400mm zoom on a full frame Nikon D610. I used: ISO 100 f10 1/250 sec. I bracketed. I can make out a sun spot at 8 o’clock. Otherwise the sun is just an orange disc to me. I’ll see what shakes when the solar eclipse passes me. Or not – if it rains. I am relatively prepared. I won’t be disappointed. Good luck to us all.
